Grieving It All

A bit of context

Grieving it all is an original 2-act musical I started developing in 2018 after meeting my mentor, the incredible Jody Gray, during a Gotham Writers workshop in 2017.

The project originated from questioning my own relationship with grief, which, oddly enough, is still a taboo concept, despite us all experiencing it constantly, and from my absolute passion for musicals.

The project has (obviously) undergone huge changes since its beginnings, and is currently still in development.

Finally, despite being a composer myself, I know I don’t have the talent matching my ambition for this passion project. Therefore, I’m looking for a (co-)composer to work with.

Synopsis

Ellie, a therapist from New York, is compelled to revive her late mother’s peculiar grief support group: “Grieving It All”. Six months, twelve sessions, to help everyone - herself unwillingly included - figure out what the f*** is on the other side of grief.

Character Breakdown

ELLIE: female-identifying, she's the lead character, a great but broke therapist, 36. To perceive her mother's heritage, she's compelled to revive the latter's grief support group.

NATE: male-identifying, beloved literature professor, 39. A year ago, his mother told him, too late, about who his father was. His lasting and bewildering depression about it will drive his marriage straight into a wall if he doesn't snap out of it soon.

SARA: female-identifying, a bright, control freak, young surgeon, interning at St Vincent Hospital, 33. Diagnosed with an aggressive form of uterine cancer, she's compelled by her mentor to undergo therapy if she wants to be able to keep working.

NANCY: female-identifying, Nate's wife, 38, consultant in accounting. She's a caring, patient woman who misses her husband deeply. She feels more and more estranged from Nate; her desire to found a family seems incompatible with Nate's unending depression.

CHIEF CONNORS: female-identifying, Chief of St Vincent's Hospital, in her mid 50's. She's the one running it all. She was trusted by Ellie's mother to make Ellie revive the grief support group. As Sara's mentor, after her diagnosis, she forces Sara to enter the grief support group.
